New Delhi: In a race to become the Goodwill Ambassador of the Indian Olympic Contingent, after the Superstar- Salman Khan and thereafter Cricket Icon- Sachin Tendulkar and Ace Shooter- Abhinav Bindra, now Oscar winning Music composer- A. R. Rahman, yesterday agreed to receive such honour.
The said role of the Goodwill Ambassador of the Indian Olympic Contingent was earlier accepted by Salman, Tendulkar and Olympic gold medallist- Abhinav Bindra, as it was offered by the Indian Olympic Association.
This time, however, the Indian Olympic Association- IOA found stating that it has also received an official written confirmation from the well- known music composer- A. R. Rahman.
While disclosing the statements from Rahman, to the IOA he said “it’s absolutely an honour and my pleasure to be a goodwill ambassador of the Indian contingent scheduled for August, 2016.”
When such confirmation is received by the Indian Olympic Association, the Secretary General Rajeev Mehta to IOA welcomed the said Music Composer and said “I would like to welcome A. R. Rahman on board as a Goodwill ambassador of Indian contingent for Rio Olympics.” Also, he specifically marked IOA’s privilege for having the “Oscar winning living legend- music composer” on the board for spreading awareness and promoting the Olympic movement.
Also, he said that “As per our plan to reach out to maximum people in the country for Olympic Sports, we are happy that Mr. Rahman has come forward from the field of music to support our athletes.” He also pointed the earlier appointments and said that “we already have Salman Khan from Bollywood, Abhinav Bindra from Olympic Sports and Sachin Tendulkar from Cricket. I am sure Mr. Rahman will inspire our sportspersons.”
It was also seen earlier, when the Salman Khan was appointed to get this honour, by becoming the Goodwill Ambassador, a huge uproar was experienced and number of news reports coming out as former and current athletes were up in arms against appointment of Salman Khan and they were demanding the answers as to why someone from the field of sports was not named by the IOA.
